Mitsubishi Optimist National Championships 2009

A boat of more angles and corners than most the humble Optimist dingy can honestly be regarded as the great nursery class of world sailing. The fleet has always been strong in Ireland, and the gathering of junior sailors in Dun Laoghaire for the annual national championships attracted an entry of nearly 250 boats, including competitors from far and wide in the international fleet representing four continents! Conditions were excellent and testing over the four days, and despite pessimistic forecasts that repeatedly predicted downpours and gales the main fleets sailed eleven races in the bay and even the youngest participants got afloat ever day.
