Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2009

Going for three in a row the organising committee for Dun Laoghaire's Volvo Regatta listened to sailors from previous events and all around the Irish Sea to redesign the programme on the water and attract record numbers yet again. Over 450 boats and something like 3500 sailors make this event the biggest participatory sporting fixture in the country, outside of the city marathons, and with entries travelling from Scotland, Wales and even the Mediteranean it has proved to be a massive tourism boost for the town too. The event was officially launched by Minister Martin O'Cuiv at the IMF Dublin Boatshow in the RDS in February, and officially opened by An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Marie Baker at a reception in the Royal Irish Yacht Club, but there was plenty more happenning along the waterfront and out on the bay where no suit or tie was required! Racing was spread over seven courses over four days to make the most of the wonderful natural resource of the bay, and the craic was mighty on shore with plenty of live music, street theatre, a carnival and even the Heineken European Rugby Cup in town touring the yacht clubs and local pubs.
