Although the procatice race was scheduled to start at 14:00, and the committee boat did leave the marina about 90 minutes before that, few of the competitors seemed keen to actually head out into what was clearly a building breeze. This hesitance was well founded as word came ashore at about 13:30 that conditions were becoming unsafe on the sailing area with gusts of 35 knots, so proceedings were abandoned for the day and the crew of the Free Enterprise returned to the marina.
